Intergroups (or Central Offices) are service entities that exist to support A.A. groups within a local area. They are typically formed by the groups themselves to carry out functions that are best handled collectively, such as maintaining meeting lists, answering phones, providing literature, and helping carry the message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

Intergroups are not governing bodies; they are service arms of the groups they serve and are supported through group participation and contributions.
